Standards & Certification

Two certifications you couldn’t avoid even if you wanted to

You may have heard the name ‘ISO’, or perhaps even about the ‘NFPA’, but do you know how much of your life these organisations touch?

The (Switzerland-based) International Organization for Standardization (ISO)

The quality-oriented ISO 9000 is probably the most well-spread certification in the planet so you may have heard of that one. But the ISO has many more certifications.

A lot more! More than 21607 standards, to be precise.1 Yup, that’s right! Twenty-one THOUSAND.

It may also be worth noting that the ISO’s 163 independent members each represent a country.2 And that, in addition, “many ISO members are part of the government structure in their country”.3 This means that the ISO is tightly interlinked with the laws of ~163 countries. Again, that’s 163 countries!

All in all, the ISO’s 21607 standards are being applied in ~163 countries. That’s a lot of impact!

The (US-based) National Fire Protection Association

With over 65000 members across the world,4 few other organisations have had a more direct impact on society than the NFPA.

The more than 300 fire-risk oriented codes it has mean that “virtually every building, process, service, design, and installation in society today is affected by NFPA documents”.5

And let’s not even mention the countless lives have been saved thanks to it, as NFPA norms underlie the operations of emergency services such as firefighting.6
